How a Mayor could deliver a Museum of Gaming

Back in 2015, I proposed that Limerick should be the home of the European Museum of Gaming.  I was at the time the newly appointed Chair of the Hunt Museum. We were looking at ideas to transform the Museum for the 2020's.

The building already needed a million of so of repairs and fire proofing.  We also wanted to open the garden to become a new public space right on the river for the public of Limerick.  But we knew that to face the future with confidence, the Hunt and Limerick needed something more and something new.

The Museum of Gaming was my suggestion and it was taken up by the Board as a key project.

It has been a long journey which has hit a roadblock but one which just needs a new impetus to solve the issues faced.

With a motivated team of volunteers, we have already proved the feasibility of the project.  We thought we were making good progress but then it hit a setback in Dublin and Limerick Council parked the idea.

As Mayor, I will get this back on the right track.  It will be one of my priorities for my term not just for tourism but to create the environment and buzz to build a gaming industry aligned closely to our existing film industry.

With the right push, could we even get an initial project opened by the Ryder Cup?  There is no reason why Limerick should not be looking in parallel to do #MoreForLimerick.

You can read more about the history of the project and what could be done in this article - How Limerick changes with the right exective mayor.
